Joe Smithers teaches our Basic Trauma and Bleeding Control class. Joe has been employed as a full-time firefighter and EMT-Intermediate for the Springfield Fire Department for the last 10 years; currently assigned to Engine 8 Shift 1 as the Driver/Engineer. Joe served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps as a Crash Fire Rescue Technician at Camp Pendleton, CA and served one tour in Iraq in 2003. Joe works part-time teaching rope rescue for the Illinois Fire Service Institute at the University of Illinois.
As an FF/EMT, Joe has responded to hundreds of trauma emergencies ranging from car wrecks to gunshot wounds to building collapses. Joe is a American Heart Association certified Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Life Support instructor. Joe has attended many trauma courses including Trauma Combat Casualty Care, and Prehospital Hospital Trauma Life Support.
In his spare time, Joe enjoys shooting competition matches in USPSA and 3 Gun as well as competing and being a certified Range Officer for the last 5 years. Last year, Joe was selected by Green Beret Kawa Mawlayee to join the 2 Alpha Training Group as a firearms instructor. To be selected, Joe competed in a year long apprenticeship program that focused on the skills needed to be a firearms instructor.
